90 Day Healthy You, Healthy Business

7 Secrets to giving yourself a 90 day Personal and Business Health Check

1.	Detox. Spring is the best time to detox. Detox your body and mind and your business. This is essential and it’s Too easy. For the body: just go on warm fruit for breakfast for three days, warm water in between, steam vegies for lunch and dinner for the same three days. For the mind: “Let Go” of negative thoughts and emotions as they are draining and focus on what you want. If you find this challenging then take up my 45min free offer so I can assist you. For the business; empty your office into the foyer of your home, clean the office thoroughly, and really justify if that is required when putting it back. It only takes one weekend and it feels amazing. Now imagine doing it all over one weekend!!!!
2.	Master your feelings. Get in touch. Rely on other people because we can’t do it alone. Anti-depressants are ripe. Adrenaline is a totally natural feeling. It is what we use to kick in and give us our natural energy and hide all the other feelings. It is a high octane body chemical. Adrenaline is our starter drug. Cortisol makes us cranky. Serotonin takes 21 days to build up and keeps us calm under a crisis. The brain is full of serotonin where we are touching someone or a pet and we are calm. When we are loved or in love we build up high amounts of serotonin. When we lack touch or love we build up cortisol steroids that effect the whole immune system. So LOVE YOU…..its time.
3.	The Stress of Success. Success can create pressure. When we are headstrong and when we are succeeding our friends don’t always handle the change. We need to maintain perspective. Rejection is often taken personally. Come from a service perspective in your work/business. If you don’t believe in what you sell you should ask yourself “What is it I would LOVE to do”? Assume nothing. ASK GREAT QUESTIONS to yourself and others.
4.	Rely on others. Humans must connect. Women in the same household will have the same menstrual cycle. Kids in Africa are dying because they are not touched. The Reliance Paradox…its always easier together. We need to stop being super stars and become Super Nova. Everyone benefits when you connect and work together toward a common goal. Plus it’s more fun.
5.	Optimism is Essential An optimist reboots the system for the next day “tomorrow will be great”.
6.	Get to CAUSE. Responsibility is yours. Responsibility for your health and business results are yours…be at Cause…I am responsible. Life is about making decisions and being responsible for those decisions. We are never failing, only winning or learning.
7.	Gratitude brings everything to you. It is a Habit. Focus on what you have as too much energy is wasted on what we don’t have. “If you can help everyone get what they want, you will ultimately get what you want” Gratitude is how we learn to be grateful for our winnings or our learnings and it keeps you calm and connected. Sending you love….

All aboard for the ride of your life… well, maybe just a quick tour through staff pays and the dangers that lurk in the detail.

TEST DRIVE
Paying staff is a critical, risky and time consuming job for you as a small business owner. Without your staff your business won¡¦t run and if you get their pay wrong or not pay them on time your staff will soon tell you. The wages your staff earn are part of the trusted relationship you build with them once you employ them. If you get it wrong this trust breaks down and you will open yourself and your business to heartache, poor morale and expense.

Week to week you are swamped with not only the pays to do but suppliers, accounts, customers, making a profit and following your passion for your business. With all this background work to do it is often easier just to pay your staff out of the till when they are hassling you for their wages and sort out the administrative details later. It¡¦s a bit like test driving a car; it feels good, sounds good, let¡¦s just buy it and worry about the details later.

DANGER AHEAD
A true cash payment to a staff member is not recorded in the business and will inevitably lead to trouble. We have all heard of the ¡¥off the books payments¡¦ that are made. These arrangements are usually verbal and sealed on a handshake and will, in time, unravel leaving you and your business exposed to litigation and additional expense. This is where the alternatives are clear ¡V cash may seem like a great idea at the time, and some staff even ask for cash payments to avoid reporting their earnings, but the risks to your livelihood can only be best likened to a car crash in the end.

You might be happy to run the risk and ¡¥pay off the books¡¦ but inevitably you will need to give your staff a payslip or a payment summary at the end of the year (when they are looking for their tax refund) or they are asking you about the superannuation you owe them. It is at this time that you look at your bits of paper where you have noted what you paid them and then try to make sense of what needs to be done. Be under no illusion that your staff will check what they are entitled to at some point, after all, when staff go to work they do it for the pay.

On the other side of the equation, the Tax Office will be asking you to hand over the income tax you have collected on their behalf and want to see how you have contributed to your staff members superannuation account. The Fair Work Ombudsman may pay you a visit and ask to see your wage and timekeeping records, ask the staff how they are paid or be there because one of your staff (or ex-staff) has made a complaint against you.

RULES, RULES & MORE RULES
To pay people correctly means that you have to consider a raft of legislation to get it right. Just the same as we all need to know the road rules to drive our new car. You need to know what obligations you have as an employer. This includes everything from what rate to pay someone through to how much superannuation is due, how much income tax to withhold, what entitlements they have to penalty rates for working weekends and public holidays and even what leave they may be entitled to. If your business is subject to an audit or inspection you may find that the investigation results in warnings, infringement notices or penalties if any Commonwealth workplace laws have been contravened.

Penalties (just like speeding fines) range in cost from $330 per contravention for on the spot infringements for record keeping and payslips such as…
failing to make or keep time and wage type records
failing to comply with the contents requirements for records
failing to issue pay slips within one working day of paying an amount
failing to comply with the contents requirements for pay slips
(source fairwork.gov.au)
…through to $33,000 per contravention of wage and conditions investigations if the matter goes to court. Of course the penalty is in addition to any back pay or additional payments (plus interest) that are owed to staff. In addition there could be bad publicity for you and your business, public apologies and the cost of attending court and engaging lawyers all adds up.
Then of course there is the issue of not complying with the Tax Office. You just need to ask your accountant what the penalties and fines are here and add them to the list.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VIEW
Investing in a payroll system will solve some of the issues for you but you will still need to be across the Award that applies to your business and how it can be best utilised within your business. The easy approach is to use the published rates however this is not getting the best out of the situation for you or your business. It¡¦s like not using all the bells and whistles that come with the new car ¡V you have paid for something and are not getting the full value out of it.
Alternatively, engaging an industry professional to do the work for you will give you easy access to advice from an experienced and knowledgeable person that will work with you to implement all the legislative requirements as well as showing you how to operate profitably within these parameters. Typically, you would think this would be something your accountant could do for you, however they are generally limited in their experiences of Award interpretation and implementation. A specialised provider will deliver tailored practical expert advice and services to assist you and your business to not only understand your compliance obligations under the federal Fair Work Act, but to ensure the most crucial asset in your business, your people, operate happily, effectively and profitably.

As a special offer to SWN members, NDL People will undertake a free audit on how your business is complying with the key requirements of the national workplace relations system set out in the Fair Work Act 2009.
Or if you¡¦d just like to ask a quick question, feel free to email or call me anytime.

1.	The first step to Changing this STRESS Scenario is to recognise that stress does negatively impact on the health of your body. Short term stress is recoverable, however prolonged or severe stress develops many responses in that ultimately diminish the capacity to recover and restore proper function.
2.	At least 45 minutes of moderate exercise daily
3.	A great nights sleep of 7 to 9 hours per night
4.	Good quality protein with every meal plus wholegrains, lentils, Fruits and Veg and Herbal Teas to actually calm the body and the brain.
5.	8 to 10 glasses of filtered or pure water every day
6.	Avoid the junk food and stimulants, sugary foods, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol
7.	Take great nutritionals such as fish oils, vitamins and minerals to strengthen nerves.

AND REMEMBER…. ONLY YOU DO STRESS…no-one can do it for you. YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOU. Discover the triggers of your stress. Ask yourself; What do I want instead? How do I get it, what do I need to do and/or learn in order to achieve it. If you tackle your problems this way you won’t do stress.

So, this summer it may be wise to create a SEVEN STEP De Stressing Planning Process so you can hit 2011 with a full tank of energy and enthusiasm.

1.	The first step is to identify what jobs, people, events do you perceive as stressful. You then need to put them in order of priority from the most stressful to the least.
2.	Now you need to identify stress management techniques that work well for you. It may be great if you include the foods, nutritional supplements, herbal teas and water that are natural calmers for the body and mind.
3.	Based on your Sources of Stress and your Stress Management techniques write down what you are going to do to manage each of the stressors in your life.
4.	Resolve to accept the things that are beyond your control…..let it go.
5.	Finalise things that you are to complete so they can be taken off your list
6.	Set your GOALS for 2011 including Physical, Mental, Emotional, Financial and Spiritual and write it down including what the actions are for you to achieve it.
7.	Every month ask yourself “What is Working” and “What is NOT Working”, then change, add or delete or outsource what is NOT working. Re-set your goal every month. This keeps you positive and on purpose and stress free.

“We Cannot Solve our Current Problems with the Same Thinking” Einstein

 Enjoy the Summer

By Michael Griffiths – www.mysmallbusinessmarketingguru.com.au

So, after putting up your own small business, how do you tackle the uphill battle of promotions? How do you make use of resources available to you for a fraction of the cost of an advertising campaign?
The answer lies in knowing how to use Social Media Networks. Social Media are networks that reach far and wide – for as long as there is an internet connection, social media gets your message across.
But it doesn’t mean that once you have access to these sites, you may proceed as you desire. Below are some guidelines that will help your small business maximize the benefits to be gained from social media marketing.

Be your own social media expert. On a budget? Then the best way to get mileage for your money is by being your own social media guru. Set aside a small fraction of the day learning the ropes. Bear in mind that these gurus also had to study from scratch, so if they can do it, so can you! Start with your own personal facebook account. Make your posts interesting yet informative. Try to learn how to effectively use photos and embedded videos to get your messages across. Only until you’ve mastered the platform by self-study shall you gain confidence when setting up your small business’ own page. Who knows, maybe someday, you can be a guru yourself?

Spend more time each day marketing online. So now that you’ve become your own social media expert, spend a good amount of time online marketing your company. Try to establish contact with “fans” of your small business page. Nothing is more satisfying than knowing that as a customer, your concerns are immediately addressed by the business owner. This can easily be done through social media – most especially through facebook and blogging – where both parties seem as though they are conversing face-to-face. Also, try to promote your business page to the most number of fellow bloggers or friends. Good service/product = positive referrals = larger possibility of getting new clients.

When starting up, don’t spend too much on hi-tech gadgets. Need to produce videos or nice photos? Well, the celphone or digital camera might be your answer. Unless, your small business is video-taping or photography services, there is no need for SLRs or high-tech movie-quality videocams. As long as your gadgets have a camera with more than 5 megapixel quality (minimum acceptable quality for printed materials and clear videos), you can just use them to make your on-cam pitches.

How effective are your social media efforts? Of course the feedback system is the best way to determine the answer to this question. Why don’t you try asking your existing customers how they heard about your business? If they say, “through the internet” (or facebook, Youtube etc.), you know your efforts are worth every eye-squinting second you spent in front of the computer. If you got your business via referrals, then try asking your client how the person who referred them to you got hold of your company. Chances are – it’s also through social media.

Once you’ve realized the benefits of marketing through social media, it’s hard to dig back into your budget and shift to traditional advertising – which costs substantially more money. Let’s face it – unless Facebook or Twitter plus Youtube are faced out (which is highly unlikely, given its popularity), your marketing efforts will always be worth every bit of time you have painstakingly spent promoting your small business.

If you thought this marketing insight was good, then you need to visit Marketing In Your Undies at www.marketinginyourundies.com with marketing video’s, templates, audio’s and a great business community to help your business grow.

When it comes to eating healthy and enjoying a healthier lifestyle, it is hard to overstate the importance of fiber in the diet. Even though fiber is most associated with grains, rice and breads, it is important to remember that fruits and vegetables also contain significant amounts of dietary fiber. In fact, the need for fiber is just one more reason to eat your fruits and vegetables every day.

In order to understand why dietary fiber is so important, it is a good idea to know what fiber is and what role it plays in digestion. Simply put, dietary fiber is the portion of food that the human body cannot digest. Fiber is found in foods of plant origin only; there is no fiber in meat and dairy products. Fiber plays an important role in the digestion of food, and in the elimination of waste products as they travel through the body.

Good sources of dietary fiber include grains, cereals, legumes, lentils, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. As we said before, meats and dairy products do not contain any dietary fiber, so it is important to eat some plant based foods ever day to get the fiber you need.

Soluble vs. insoluble

Not all fiber is the same, and fiber comes in two forms – soluble and insoluble. All plant materials contain both types of fiber, but some sources contain more of one than the other. Eating a variety of foods rich in fiber every day will ensure you get adequate levels of both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Insoluble fiber is important in keeping people regular, and it has shown promise as well in the prevention of some types of colon and rectal cancers. Insoluble fiber is mainly found in wheat brain, some types of vegetables and in whole grain products. Some vegetables rich in insoluble fiber include carrots, peas and broccoli. The skins of fruits are also rich in insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber, on the other hand, has shown promise in reducing levels of cholesterol in the blood, and at reducing the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream. Soluble fiber is abundant in dried peas, lentils, beans, barley, oat bran, and in many fruits and vegetables.

How much fiber is enough

Many people are unsure just how much dietary fiber they need every day, but most dietitians recommend that we consume about 30 grams of dietary fiber per day.

Of course, that is easier said that done, and it is important to know which foods are high in fiber in order to boost your daily fiber consumption. In the case of packaged foods like breads and crackers, the fiber content will be listed as part of the nutritional label. In the case of fruits and vegetables, there are charts which show the fiber content of an average size piece. Some grocery stores post this information, and it is also widely available on the internet.

When increasing dietary fiber, it is best to make the increase gradual. A sudden jump in dietary fiber can lead to bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort. In addition, it is important to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, in order for fiber to have the best effect. When choosing breads and cereals, it is best to go with healthier whole grains. In general, the less processing, the healthier the foods.

Eating the skins of fruits and vegetables is a great way to increase dietary fiber. Many people like to make fruit shakes and smoothies that use the skins of their favorite fruits. This makes a delicious and nutritious way to increase fiber consumption. In addition, keeping a variety of fiber rich foods, such as apples, nuts, seeds and bran muffins, around for snacks is a great idea.

And finally, eating a wide variety of foods will ensure that you get plenty of fiber, as well as the vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that make a balanced diet so important.

One of the biggest challenges facing those trying to follow a healthy diet is the local restaurant. Eating out presents special challenges, such as not knowing how the food was prepared, how much fat it contains, and whether or not the healthiest ingredients were used.

Many restaurant chains, and even some fast food restaurants, have recognized the demand for healthier menu choices, and they are working hard to satisfy that demand. All too often, however, the healthy choices on a restaurant menu are limited and unappealing. It is important, therefore to pay close attention to the menu and make the healthiest choices possible.

One of the most important thing diners can do to eat healthy at restaurants is to be proactive. Diners should not be afraid to ask how a dish is prepared, or what ingredients are used in its preparation. If the server does not know, ask him or her to check with the chef. A good chef will be happy to answer such questions, and to make modifications in the recipe if needed. In addition, most restaurants will happily accommodate special needs, such as low fat or low sodium dishes. After all, the restaurant is there to serve its patrons.

Some of our favorite tips for healthy eating in restaurants include:

One good rule of thumb to use when dining out is to order entrees that are grilled, baked or broiled. Deep fried dishes are best avoided. If you are unsure how a dish is prepared, don’t be afraid to ask.

Portion size is just as important at the restaurant as they are at home. That means ordering the petit fillet instead of the full size steak, requesting half size portions of French fries, and maybe even forgoing that tempting dessert. Choosing leaner cuts of meat or fish is also a good way to eat healthier.

When choosing side dishes, ask if steamed vegetables are available. Steamed veggies are an excellent, low fat, low calorie choice for many diners. Vegetables that are fried, au gratin, or prepared in cream or butter sauces are best avoided.

When ordering salad, ask if fat free choices are available. Most restaurants have several fat free or low fat varieties of salad dressing available. If no low fat option exists, request the dressing on the side so that you can control the amount that is used.

When ordering soup, choose broth based soups, and avoid bisques or rich soups like cream of crab or cream of broccoli. A simple vegetable soup is a delicious and low fat alternative.

Replace high fat, high calorie French fries with healthier alternatives such as fresh fruit or an unbuttered baked potato. Most restaurants will be happy to accommodate such special requests.

In Italian restaurants, stick with the tomato based sauces and avoid cream or heavy Alfredo sauces. A simple pesto sauce without meat is a good choice for most pasta dishes.

When dining at oriental restaurants, go with the steamed rice and stir fried vegetable entrees. Avoid the heavy sauces and request that your meal be prepared with less oil. In addition, try to choose dishes that feature less meat and more fresh vegetables.

Choose a light dessert of fresh fruit or sorbet. When ordering traditional desserts, order one and share it with your dining partner.

Finally, when dining at a fast food restaurant, it is important to avoid the temptation of super sizing the meal. Fast food restaurants often make their larger portions more attractive by pricing them competitively, but a big part of healthier eating is to control portion sizes. In addition, most fast food chains now offer healthier alternatives, such as salads and baked potatoes, as well as prominently displayed nutritional information.

While dining out certainly presents challenges to those trying to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, there is no reason to forgo the pleasure of an occasional meal out. By following the guidelines listed above, and by adding some creative tips of your own, you can make dining out a healthy experience as well as a pleasant one.
